About the municipal congress
Since 2014, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation has organised an annual nationwide municipal congress to strengthen local democracy and promote local political engagement. The congress is aimed at decision-makers and experts from local politics and administration as well as representatives of associations and local initiatives. The aim is to motivate active participation in local political and public welfare-orientated activities. Annually changing themes and locations offer the opportunity to familiarise oneself with successful projects and encourage involvement in local politics or the community. Practice-oriented excursions complement the programme.
One highlight of the congress is the presentation of the "Integrative City" award, which honours cities or municipalities for their commitment to cohesion and combating extremism. The municipal congress covers a wide range of topics from energy and accessibility to smart cities and climate resilience and usually takes place as a two-day face-to-face event, although digital or hybrid formats are also possible. International input from the Foundation's offices abroad also enriches the congress.
